Robert Van Gemert - MD

Born and raised in the mountains of Northern New Mexico provided me with a deep awareness and appreciation of the power and fulfillment of living in a region of diverse cultural influences.  It was a rural setting void of congestion, traffic, pollution, and serious crime. An area of marked natural beauty and lots of fresh air.  A setting not unlike the island of Moloka’i.

I earned my Bachelor’s and Medical Doctor’s degrees at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.  I went on from there to do a Family Practice Residency at University of California, Davis, satellite program in Merced, CA.  I realized at the end of my residency that California was not the place for me.  Western Colorado offered me the wonderful life style I had experienced in New Mexico.  I spent 33 years in private medical practice in Montrose, Colorado.

Beginning in 2008 my wife Laurie and I began vacationing on Moloka’i.  Each year we returned and felt an increasing love for the island.  Now we want to spend as much time as possible in this amazing place.  I feel very fortunate to have gain employment at the Moloka’i Community Health Center.  I look forward to serving the medical needs of the islanders.  My hobbies include fly fishing, hiking, and venturing out to explore new territory.
