Denise Houghtaling is the new permanent Nurse Practitioner at the Molokai Community Healthcare Center. Denise has moved here from the Big Island and before that she lived in the Seattle area. She has been board certified in Family Medicine since 2000. Before Denise became a Family Nurse Practitioner her specialty was trauma/emergency medicine working as a critical care air/ground transport nurse in Seattle and in Hawaii. Today, Denise is a member of Hawaii DMAT serving the country and treaty countries in rescue and saving lives.
She has received Masters’ degrees from University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University and Johns Hopkins University. Denise is studying forensic nursing and has attained her Forensic Nurse Examiner credentials through Johns Hopkins University where she will be attaining her doctorate. She was recently published for her research work in The Journal of Trauma Nursing.
Denise’s husband, Greg is a firefighter with Hawaii County on the Big Island and they have two sons and one daughter. Recently, Denise and Greg have welcomed their 4th grandchild.
Denise likes to be outside whether its working in her garden or just enjoying the sunshine. She is active in Kempo karate and all outdoor water activities. Denise has an uncanny interest in fishing as well and states in all her years on the Big Island she has never caught a fish- she is hoping that her luck will change for her on Molokai! She has an AKC Champion Pug named Gracie who she shows at AKC dog shows. Gracie is a Chinese Pug and is working towards her Grand Champion.
